What We Do

Our Mission

Our mission statement is to create an educational environment that broadens our understanding and appreciation of multiculturalism, diversity, and social justice. The Latino Outreach Program helps build relationships to establish a broader community network. The Latino Outreach Program at Ruth Cottage & The Patticake House protects victims, prevent violence, and empower our non-English speaking survivors.

Hispanic communities struggle to balance their personal safety with competing goals such as family unity, financial security, and cultural loyalty. While domestic violence poses difficulties for all women who want to seek help, immigration status can create additional obstacles for abused women who want to escape domestic abuse. A Hispanic immigrant must consider a wide range of repercussions before she can decide whether to report domestic violence to law enforcement or to seek help from social services.

Through our community initiative The Latino Outreach Program, we will be able to provide opportunities for Spanish speaking community members to recognize their own strengths and use them to stop the cycle of violence and transform the community.

One of the goals of The Latino Outreach Program is to document the various environmental factors which hinder or improve an immigrant’s chance of receiving help in a domestic violence situation. Our brochures and outreach events assess the factors which encourage undocumented Hispanic immigrants from seeking help against domestic violence committed by their undocumented, Hispanic partners or etc. On the other hand, what discourage immigrants from seeking help include cultural sanctioning of domestic violence, lack of knowledge about social services, and legal remedies which do not benefit the victim.
