What we knew about Joy Hill was that she was a passionate community involved person. We knew that she was a hard worker who donated much of her time to local non-profits and causes that were near to her heart, such as the creation of what would become Ruth’s Cottage and The Patticake House.
What we did not know about Joy Hill back in September 2002, was that she was living in an abusive marriage of over ten years. What no one expected was that one night after leaving a RCPCH Advisory Meeting to discuss next steps in the development of this organization, Joy would go home only to be shot by her husband six times, in a murder-suicide.
This tragedy shocked and galvanized the communities’ efforts to get a domestic violence program going, where victims would have a safe place to go when in danger. Where trained advocates could listen to and advise victims, sometimes helping them to get protective orders. Where staff would focus on outreach and education to help our communities know we are here to help. Her story has led to thousands of women, men and children being saved from their own family violence.
Please help us honor Joy’s memory by giving a gift in her name and support our July 2021 Annual Campaign for Joy. You can make a donation in Joy’s memory through Venmo (our username is @ruthscottagethepatticakehouse), online (https://stopthehurtga.org/donations/), or mail a check to PO Box 2727, Tifton, GA 31793.
